Coffee – botanically known as Coffea arabica – belongs to the plant family of the Rubiaceae, the reddish plants. The Arabica Coffee plant is a gorgeous house plant with shiny, deep green leaves. White, jasmine scented flowers blanket your plant before becoming coffee cherries which are the fruit of the coffee plant. Coffee plants are natural air purifiers. So they offer the added bonus of cleaning the air in your home! You can grow your own now with this attractive indoor or patio plants. There will be more than one plant per pot which you can divide and pot on separately if you wish. This plant can grow up to 1.2-1.8m indoors (within a pot), or you can train them to be a bush 0.9-1.2m tall. They are pretty flexible. In tropical climates coffee plants make lovely hedges or specimen plants. They can grow up to 300cm tall and 200cm wide when planted in ground. Germination may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks so be patient. Once the beans have sprouted, give the seedlings very bright light, moderate humidity and normal room temperatures. The plants will require a light fertiliser application every month.
Hints: First soak the coffee seeds in water for 24 hours. Then sow the seeds in Horti Seed & Potting Mix or wet vermiculite in which the excess water has been drained.

Soil / Water: Well-drained. Keep soils consistently moist but not soggy.
Dislikes: direct sunlight, but likes bright light, indirect light is best. Direct sun may scorch leaves.
Problems: No serious insect or disease problems. Watch for scale, mealybug, thrips, caterpillars and mites.
